As the New Year begins everyone usually sets resolutions that they know they are not going to follow through with and within the first month they give up on them. I invite you to join me in bringing in 2012 by setting goals instead of resolutions. Goals if set properly help you to follow through and commit to yourself versus a resolution that you don't really have to commit to. In 2006, I decided to start setting goals and over the past 6 years I have accomplished many tasks from losing weight, attending and graduating from massage therapy school, opening my own massage business, and writing and publishing a book about cancer.
SO LETS TALK GOAL SETTING:
The very first step is that you have to believe in yourself and what you want to accomplish and that you deserve it, what ever the outcome is.
Goals have many steps to them because you have to have long term and short term goals along with objectives to accomplish them.
So lets take a look at setting a weight loss goal for 2012:
Long term goal is to lose 40lbs by July 1, 2012.
Short term goal is to lose approximately 7lbs per month
Next set your objectives:
Long term goal is to lose 40lbs:
Objective 1 - eat more fruits and vegetables
Objective 2 - exercise minimum 3 times per week
Objective 3 - meditate daily
Short term goal is to lose 7lbs per month:
Objective 1 - add oatmeal and mixed berries to breakfast at least 4 days per week.
Objective 2 - mix in more green leafy vegetables with lunch, dinner and supper
Objective 3 - do yoga on Sunday, Tuesday, & Thursday and weight lifting on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday with Saturday
as a rest day.
Objective 4 - Start each day with a daily affirmation such as: Everyday I am getting healthier or I love myself.
You could break down your goal even further to lose about 1.5lbs per week and list the objectives for that goal.
The main thing to remember is not to beat yourself up if you miss a day or do not reach your goal for that month or week. Take a look at what obstacles were in the way and what you can change to help you get back on track.
Other goals to set may include: financial, job changes, health, and family goals.
